RAW FILES & YOUR GALLERY
Your photographer takes thousands of photographs throughout your wedding day.
So it is completely reasonable to wonder:
Can I get all of them? Should I ask for the RAW or unedited photographs too?
The answer varies depending on the photographer, and even on the photography culture you are coming from.
Two Different Approaches to Wedding Galleries
Approach 1: Receive all the JPEGS / RAW’s
In Korea, it is fairly common for wedding photographers or studios to provide clients with all of the unedited JPEGs first. The couple then goes through those photographs and chooses a certain number they would like professionally retouched.
Benefits:
- You get all that was photographed.
- You have more control over which images receive the most attention.
But it also means you become part of the editing process.
A wedding photographer takes thousands of photographs throughout a full wedding day. Within those files are blinking eyes, missed expressions, test shots, focus misses, lighting tests, and many nearly identical photographs taken within seconds.
Going through all and making selection takes a very long time.
Approach 2: Trust the Artist
In the U.S., many photographers don’t give out RAW’s or unedited files.
You may have heard photographers compare RAW files to the raw ingredients at a restaurant. When you go to a restaurant, you generally don’t ask the chef to bring out the ingredients from the kitchen. You are trusting them to prepare and serve the finished meal.
And there are practical reasons photographers may not provide RAW files, including storage, copyright, and the possibility of their images being edited and shared in a way that no longer represents their work.
So benefit: you simply enjoy your engagement or wedding photoshoot, wait for your gallery, and receive a collection you love.
But this means you have to be willing to trust the photographer’s eye. It’s giving up control on what moments they choose to preserve and edit, and how they edit the colors.
The Solution: Hire a Photographer You Trust
So ultimately, I think the best solution is to hire a photographer whose eye you trust.
Personally, if I am investing thousands of dollars into a professional’s work, I do not want another large assignment afterward.
I do not want to spend my honeymoon sorting through 6,000 photographs, comparing nearly identical expressions and deciding which one is slightly better.
I would rather hire someone who can look through everything that happened, recognize the moments worth preserving, and deliver the strongest version of that story back to me.
But that kind of trust should not be blind.
Ideally, before hiring a photographer, take time to look through more than just a few favorite images on Instagram. Look through full galleries when they are available. Read reviews. Pay attention to whether their work feels consistent across different lighting, locations, and parts of the wedding day. And if possible, talk with them about how they select and edit photographs so that your expectations are aligned before the wedding.
You are not only hiring someone to press the shutter. You are trusting their judgment about which moments represent your day and how those photographs will ultimately look.
Experience I want to provide at INNER DELIGHT STUDIO
Curation is part of the standard experience. I hold myself responsible for thoughtfully selecting the moments, expressions, and images that best belong in your final story. That means even if a photo isn’t technically perfect, I’ll still include it when the moment is meaningful or when you look great.
Part of that responsibility, for me, is creating photographs that will still feel beautiful years from now. I tend to edit with classic, natural colors rather than leaning heavily into temporary editing trends. My hope is that ten or twenty years from now, you will not feel the need to go back to the RAW files and re-edit your wedding because the original gallery suddenly feels dated.
At the same time, I understand that some clients genuinely value having the original files for archival purposes or simply want access to everything that was captured.
For that reason, RAW files can be added to your collection as an optional add-on if having those files is important to you.
But whether or not you choose that option, my responsibility remains the same:
To photograph your day thoughtfully, choose the moments worth preserving, and deliver a finished gallery that brings you back to the people, emotions, and relationships that made the day meaningful.
